How do I fit carpet on stairs?

Carpet has a specific ‘pile direction’ (i.e. the direction in which the fibres of the carpet ‘lean’) - when fitting a carpet on stairs, this pile direction must run from the top of the stairs to the bottom (length ways). You can usually tell the pile direction by looking at a cross section of the carpet, of running your hand along it to check for resistance. Also, if you drop a coin onto the carpet it will bounce if the direction of the pile - try this several times and you’ll notice the pattern! Please note that with striped carpets, the stripe will usually follow the pile direction.
