Softness/Feel

The feel of a carpet is of course a key factor for a domestic setting; there is always a slight trade-off between durability and softness but this can be balanced with care. In terms of materials, wool is naturally soft but some find undyed/untreated wool to have a scratchy texture - this is particularly true in wool loop carpets. The natural fibres tend to be rougher and more rigid, with jute being the most soft. Viscose has possibly the softest feel of any of the materials, which makes it a popular choice for bedroom and lounge. In terms of construction, velvet carpets have the most luxurious finish, and with all carpets pile height and density will affect the over feel, with a deeper, denser pile generally producing a more pleasant texture. For feel, more than any other factor, it is very important to request a sample before making a purchase.
