Backing

Carpet comes with various different backings - primarily jute, latex, synthetic and felt... Jute or Hessian backing is hardwearing and flexible, in addition to being sustainable and environmentally friendly. Latex backing is often used for natural floorcoverings as it is ideal for holding the fibres together, and can withstand their natural expansion and contraction in different temperatures. Synthetic backing is the most common, often referred to by the brand name ‘ActionBac’ which is the industry standard. Like jute it is very hardwearing. Felt provides a spongy layer which can make up for lack of underlay if necessary; it is generally used for budget carpets so very few of the products listed on our website will have felt backing.
