'What Is A Carpet Remnant?' And Other Common Questions

By Jim (16/05/2016)

We get asked this question a lot by our customers (along with other similar ones), and we decided it was time to give some comprehensive answers!

What Is A Remnant?

1. So, What Is A Remnant?

[rem-nuh nt]

noun
1. a remaining, usually small part, quantity, number, or the like.
2. a fragment or scrap.

When manufacturers sell carpet rolls, there is always a certain amount left-over; this is called a 'remnant' - they are also known as roll-ends or offcuts. The width of carpet is an industry standard (most commonly 4 meters) but the roll length is determined by the manufacturer - they can be up to 35 meters long, so remnants can be anything shorter than that!

2. Okay...Does That Mean All Remnants Are Small?

No, in fact they are often several metres long - we distinguish on our website between ‘remnants’ which are up to 10 metres long and ‘rolls’ which are longer, however this is purely our own system - they are all remnants! You may see the phrase ‘room size’ here and elsewhere on the internet - this usually means about 4-5 metres long by 4 meters wide, suitable for the average house.

NB: On our website, the length is always the first measurement, and width the second - that can be especially important when ordering striped carpet!

Are Remnants Damaged?

3. Are Remnants Damaged?

All of our remnants are brand new and the vast majority are in perfect condition - on the odd occasion that there is any kind of issue, the remnant will be marked as a ‘B-Grade’, with the details included. This can be a manufacturing fault or damage sustained in transit, but these are usually minor and will not affect the overall performance of the product.

4. What About Quality?

Most of the time, there’s no difference in quality - as the remnant is simply a piece taken from the end of a full roll, the two are identical apart from the size.

How Can Remnants Be Sold At Discount?

5. How Can Remnants Be Sold At A Discount?

We are able to sell them at a discount price because manufacturers can’t sell these smaller pieces to wholesale suppliers who rely on having a ‘bulk supply’ of carpet. We only stock remnants from top designer brands like Westex, Brintons and Crucial Trading, so you can shop with confidence!

6. Are All Your Remnants From Discontinued Ranges?

In fact, that majority of our remnants are from current carpet ranges, but we do have some which the manufacturers no longer produce - that means that we sell carpet here that you won’t get anywhere else!

How Often Do You Get New Stock?

7. How Often Do You Get New Stock?

We do not have a definite schedule as it’s not 100% certain when remnants will be available, but we do have new deliveries regularly and are always updating our stock database.

8. Do You Have ‘X’ Carpet?

Generally speaking if the carpet does not appear on our website, we do not have it as a remnant - however, our links with various manufacturers means that we can order some for you as a regular carpet - however, these will be at ordinary sales prices, rather than our discounted remnants prices.

We hope that cleared some things up for you! We do have more handy tips here on our FAQ, and if you need to know anything else, please do get in touch with us!
